Joseph, we praise you, prince of God’s own
household,
Hearing the promise made of old to David,
Chosen to foster Christ, the Lord’s anointed,
Son of the Father.
Strong in your silence, swift in your obedience,
Saving God’s firstborn, when you fled from Harod,
Cherish God’s children as you cherished Jesus,
Safe in your keeping.
Husband of Mary, one in joy and sorrow,
share with God’s people love and peace and
blessing;
may your example help our homes to mirror
Nazareth’s glory.
Saint of the dying, when your work was ended
Jesus and Mary stood beside your deathbed;
so in life’s evening may they stand beside you,
calling us homeward.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made
me glad by your works;
at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
How great are your works, O Lord!
Your thoughts are very deep!
The righteous flourish like the palm tree,
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
They are planted in the house of the Lord,
they flourish in the courts of our God.
Still productive in old age,
they are full of sap and green,
showing that the Lord is upright.
The Lord is my rock

PSALM PRAYER
Let us pray (pause for quiet prayer):
God of the righteous,
you guided holy Joseph by angels
and made him the protector of the holy family
at Bethlehem, in Egypt, and at Nazareth.
By your eternal love for us,
make him our guide and protector in this life
and especially at the hour of our death.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

MATTHEW 1:18-21
When Jesus’ mother Mary had been engaged to
Joseph, but before they lived together, she was
found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man
and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace,
planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when
he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph,
son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary
as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from
the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to
name him Jesus, for he will save his people from
their sins.”
